Breckenridge, Colorado

Hey guys! As most of you may know, Stephen and I just got back from a trip to Breckenridge! I thought I’d give a recap of our trip and share some more photos with you guys. It was seriously so beautiful there! (Ps. Got lots of questions about what I wore during the trip so I’ve linked items at the end of the post 🙂 )

So we met another couple there, Matt and Julie. Side note–Julie and I actually met over IG when I first started my account and was doing BBG. Through commenting on each others photos we quickly discovered that we were like friend soulmates and decided to meet in person over dinner when she was visiting Raleigh. We’ve been friends ever since and she is basically the shit (and the smartest person I’ve ever met, literally). Anyway, she and her fiancé Matt are awesome so we were in good company 🙂

Stephen and I arrived on Wednesday and flew into Denver. We picked up our rental car and before driving to Breckenridge (it’s about 1.5 hours away) we had to make a stop at Voodoo Doughnuts! We heard that this is the place to get doughnuts, and, well….you all know how I feel about doughnuts! Our verdict? They were good, but not as good as our local spot hehe. The only place that has compared to our local spot here in Durham is Sidecar in Los Angeles.

We then headed to Breckenridge and got all of our ski gear once we arrived so we’d be ready to ski the next day. As soon as we arrived to Breckenridge though, the altitude changes hit us hard  haha. Growing up in Kansas, I went to visit CO a lot when I was younger and I remember getting really bad altitude sickness to the point of fainting. (I seem to have a lot of bad luck with fainting, huh?). But yeah as soon as we got out of the car we felt really dizzy and knew we needed to start drinking a ton of water ASAP. We even bought this little oxygen cans which give you puffs of O2! If you saw my IG stories, you know we were highly entertained by those haha. But as a general disclaimer, if you’re going to somewhere with high altitude, you don’t need the O2 canisters. I mean, I don’t think those actually help. They literally give you a puff of O2 for a second and then you’re back to your normal lol. I think the best thing is to just drink like 3x the amount of water you normally would, drink electrolytes through drinks like pedialyte, and also be careful of drinking too much alcohol. The effect of alcohol hits you much harder there! But in general, your body should adjust within 24 hours or so.

MOVING ON. So the first day we were there we pretty much took it easy. We went back to the Airbnb apartment that we were renting and met Julie and Matt there when they finished skiing. It started snowing really hard at that point so we just stayed in for the night, made dinner, and relaxed. The view from our apartment was so gorgeous–we could see all of Breckenridge and the slopes! In general we had really good weather when we were there. It snowed a ton on Wednesday and Friday so we had perfect skiing conditions Thursday, and in general it just made our view extra gorgeous!

Thursday was our ski day. We got to the slopes (we went to Peak 8) around 9am and then parted ways from Matt and Julie (they are much better skiers/snowboarders lol). I’ve skied a bunch in my life but I haven’t for 10 years or so, and Stephen has only skied once so we decided to hit the green (easiest) slopes. Let’s just say that it came back to me very quickly and I probably could have gone to the blues (intermediate) slopes, but Stephen hadn’t basically ever skied and needed to stick to the greens haha–so I didn’t want to leave him! Plus, I really just enjoyed skiing again in general so I didn’t mind just having fun with it and doing the greens. I will say though, Stephen did really well for someone who has only skied one time 15 years ago haha. Whenever he fell he would get back up so quickly and was still having so much fun. I feel like a lot of people could have been like, this sucks I don’t want to do it anymore! And also, since I know you are all dying to know, he didn’t fall once on our last run of the day 🙂

That night we decided to go to Main Street in Breckenridge for dinner. Again, our Airbnb was great because we were high enough on the mountain that we had such a beautiful view, but we were only a 2 minute drive down to Main Street with all the restaurants and shops. We ended up going to this Mexican restaurant that we passed, I think it was called Fiesta Jalisco. Just good Mexican food–nothing fancy! And then since was 8pm we went home, played card games, and went to sleep. Because you know (insert grandma and grandpa emojis).

Friday was our last day so we started our day off by sleeping in (until 7AM haha), and explored more of downtown Breckenridge. We ended up going to a dispensary first because we were just curious! We didn’t buy anything, and nothing against anyone who does smoke weed, but it’s never been my (or Stephen’s) thing. Regardless though, it was really cool to see the dispensary and all their products. They had everything from edible chocolates, gummies, drinks, etc. Afterwards we went to grab lunch. We found this cute cafe called Artisan 206 and everything on the menu looked delicious! I got a pulled pork burrito and Stephen got fried chicken and waffles. So good! Oh and they also had a make your own Bloody Mary bar so that was fun! After lunch we decided to go to this cookie shop to pick up some massive cookies and then I ran across the street to get ice cream. You know–always need something sweet after lunch! Especially when on vacay 😉

That night we went to the Ice Castles in Dillion, which is about 30 minutes away from Breckenridge (if you go, get tickets online in advance!) And yes, Ice Castles are exactly what they sound like–castles made out of ice! They were seriously so cool to see. If you’re in the area I definitely recommended going to see them. After the ice castles, we found a nearby Italian spot called Sauce on the Blue. It was super cozy inside and the food was good! Definitely not the best vodka sauce I’ve ever had but everything else was pretty delicious 😉

Well, that about sums up our trip! The next morning (Saturday) we left for the airport and over 12 hours later we arrived back in RDU. On the way back we had a 3 hour layover so that kind of sucked, but the direct flight there was super easy. Stephen and I both definitely want to go back whether it’s during a summer or winter. It was seriously so beautiful!
