I don’t know why but I have always loved having hardwood floors in the bedroom. Again, don’t ask me why because we never had hardwoods in the bedroom growing up so it’s not like it was something I was accustomed to. But when Stephen and I went house hunting for our first home, hardwood floors in the bedroom (the whole house really) was on my wish list. And to be honest, I’m shocked that we found it in our old house! Regardless of a home’s price point, it’s pretty rare to have hardwoods everywhere (unless you’re building and can decide that from the start) so we got really lucky that the previous owner hated carpet and had installed hardwoods in the entire house.
So fast forward to our new house. After our offer was accepted, Stephen and I started talking about what changes we would want to make. One of the first things I said was “I want to get rid of the carpet in the bedroom!” Stephen was like is that really a priority? Okaaay, so was it necessary? No. Buuuut were any changes really necessary? 😉 So I started doing research and right away knew that hardwoods would be expensive and it started to seem like it was a project that needed to be put on the back burner. But then I was introduced to luxury vinyl plank (LVP) by our friends Ashley and Jared. They had used it in part of their house and absolutely loved how it turned out, so I started looking into it as an option for the bedroom.
Here is why we went with the Modin Rigid Vinyl Plank from Flooret and why I would choose this over hardwoods in general!
-In general, LVP is much more affordable. The signature style that we got from Flooret is their premium collection and it is still priced at $3.95 per sq foot. With hardwoods, you’re going to pay closer to $6-20 a sq foot, and that $6 is not going to get you a high quality hardwood.
-Regarding quality and durability, it is much more durable than hardwoods. They are actually scratch resistant and 100% waterproof. So especially if you have dogs or kids, you don’t have to worry about LVP scratching like you do with hardwoods. Similarly, if you go out of town and your washing machine or dishwasher breaks and you have a flood of water all over your floors (god forbid), LVP is 100% waterproof where as hardwoods you would have to worry about terrible water damage.
-Installation is much easier than hardwoods.
-LVP has a similar look and feel to hardwoods. One of the things that I love about the signature LVP that we went with from Flooret is that it has natural grooves and textures that mimic the look of hardwood. Their planks are also wider and longer than standard vinyl planks giving your space a more similar look and feel to actual hardwood floors, while giving your space a more elevated feel.
-Their signature LVP is composed of a 4omm wear layer (which is 2x the industry standard) with a ceramic bead, scratch resistant, and UV protective coating.
-Residential life-time warranty
-100% recyclable
Okay, so moving on to how we chose the color for our bedroom and closet. I knew I personally wanted something lighter because I just like that look/feel more in a house. But I really think it comes down to personal preference and home inspo/style. I will say though that some of the feedback y’all sent me is that dirt/dog hair was much more noticeable on your darker floors so that sold me even more on a lighter color. But in general I think you have to consider what goes with the overall vibe/style of your home. I originally reviewed several 12” samples from Flooret and was torn between the Soho signature and Sutton signature. I ended up going with the Soho, which is the lighter of the two, and I’m so happy with it. It gives our bedroom the lighter and airy vibe I was hoping for. Our friends do have the Hafren Signature color and the darker looks amazing in their space if you’re leaning towards a darker LVP. Below are some other photos of how it looks in our space.
I don’t think we will ever move, or be in a position to choose flooring for the entire house, but if we were I would definitely go with the LVP over hardwoods for all the reasons above! In the future I’d love to change out the carpet in the other bedrooms and bonus room with the LVP but one project at a time 😉 If you have any questions about our experience or LVP let me know. As a side note, we used @mattpoolehardwood for the actual installation and I also can’t recommend him and his team enough! xxC
