So I know this topic seems a tad specific, haha, but I’ve actually had a few people ask me how we’ve been adjusting to Denver in general and specifically with the weather since it is pretty different from Raleigh, NC. So when we got snow this morning (for the 3rd or 4th time this year) and one of you DM’d me about it, I figured I’d share my thoughts here. I also know more people are considering moving to Denver or just somewhere else entirely different than where they currently live which has a pretty different climate. That said, hopefully, this post sheds some light on how we are/have adjusted to a different climate and gives you some things to consider if you’re planning a move!
For starters, one of the biggest things that drew us to Denver was the weather. One reason being, we were honestly so over the humidity – we felt like during the summer we rarely wanted to spend time on our outdoor patio or screened-in porch because it was so uncomfortable out. I mean, if you live in a humid climate you know that you are sweating constantly haha. Of course, there are pros and cons to both types of climates but for us personally, we were ready for a change in that department. Aside from wanting a drier climate though, we still wanted the seasons which Denver obviously has. At first, we were a little worried that it would be “too cold” but the cold here feels very different since it’s dry (vs. humid) and the sun is out so often. So like today, the temperature is in the 20s but with a typical winter jacket, it feels very comfortable out. Also, the great thing about Denver (enough though it can snow in April or even May which is obviously very different than Raleigh), is it melts very quickly. Stephen being from Chicago really didn’t love the weather there because it was overcast/grey a lot of the time in the winter. Also, like a lot of other cities, when it snows then it would just sit there for weeks and get gray/slushy (things that definitely would be harder/annoying to adjust to). So in terms of us adjusting to the weather in Denver, yes we get snow fairly often but it’s beautiful when it snows and then melts fairly quickly so that isn’t hard to adjust to! And then in terms of the actual temperature degree-wise, it is colder but the dry air helps. Plus if you just dress appropriately (just a typical winter jacket) then it’s very comfortable IMO!
All that to say – if you’re thinking of moving to a different climate, I would recommend visiting during the months that are going to be most different from what you’re used to in your home city. We didn’t visit Denver in summer or fall because we knew those months would be prime (hello, no humidity lol). But we came in December and again in March so we could get a feel of what the winters and early spring would be like. And yes, it was definitely different but we ended up really liking it; so all that to say, we had a better idea of what to expect when we moved here which helped with the transition.
I’ll save this post to my Denver Series where I share more Denver-related content for anyone thinking of moving or visiting!
