Our Bedroom Transformation: Before & After

Hi guys! So I am very excited about today’s post because we finally have a room in the house that is pretty much complete! I know that when you move, furnishing your new space is a work in progress and in fact it’s better to slowly layer things overtime versus feeling like you have to buy everything all at once. And as y’all know, over the last year we’ve been slowly buying new pieces and swapping out pieces from our old house that either weren’t really our style anymore or didn’t work with the new space. Everything is still very much a work in progress but our bedroom is the one room that is pretty much finished, minus updating the blinds and adding artwork. But I’m so happy we focused on our bedroom as one of the areas to “complete” first because it’s one of the rooms we spend most of our time in. I’m super pleased with how everything turned out, and that it was delivered in a timely manner 😉

As you can see in the photos below, this is what the bedroom looked like when we moved in. Well, it actually had carpet and we replaced it with the luxury vinyl plank – they installed the floors literally hours after we closed so I didn’t get a photo with carpet 🙁 but you get the gist! I just wanted to show y’all though the space we were working with to start.

After the floors, the next thing that had to be changed was the paint. We ended up painting it “simply white” by Benjamin Moore which is what the rest of our house is painted as well. Next up was the furniture! We upgraded to a king bed #bless and swapped out the fan but otherwise, everything else was from our old bedroom. For the first 6 months of living here, our bedroom looked like the photo below. We didn’t want to get new pieces of furniture impulsively, we really wanted to think about how we wanted our bedroom to look and feel long-term and then fill it accordingly! Side note, that is one recommendation I would have when designing a new space – don’t feel like you have to rush to fill it. Take your time and really feel confident about the pieces you’re filling it with.

Bedroom after we first moved in

When originally planning out our bedroom, I created a Pinterest board and pinned photos that represented the style and feel that I wanted our bedroom to mimic. Doing this is hugely helpful because it’s an easy way to see what you gravitate towards. After lots of thought and pinning, we (well, I say we but Stephen doesn’t really care too much TBH lol), wanted something that was overall neutral, felt calming, and that incorporated natural wood with darker elements like iron. You’ll notice that in the new bedroom furniture that the chair legs have natural wood elements and the bench and side tables have the black iron accents. In general I’ve noticed that it something I really gravitate towards in this house – I love natural wood to keep a space lighter and warmer but I love the contrast of darker elements like black iron.

You can see in the photos below what we ended up with keeping all that in mind! I ended up being able to partner with Kathy Kuo on this post and styling our bedroom which I was so excited about (they were also super generous and gave me a discount code for y’all too KKHXCG20)! They carry many different pieces so there is something for everyone, but their site is highly curated so you know you’re getting overall great quality along with an elevated selection. As you can see in the after photos they have everything from lighting, to rugs, to benches, to chairs, to tables …basically any part of the home you can think of! So given their selection, finding pieces to fit the aesthetic I wanted was really easy. I feel like we finally have a “grown up” bedroom that I won’t feel like I need to upgrade or swap out the pieces over time. Patience and quality > filling the space quickly with items you want to replace a year or two later. You can shop everything via the footer at the bottom and code KKHXCG20 can be used towards the Kathy Kuo items — which is a lot of what is in our bedroom 🙂 Sale items and some other random items excluded but you can apply it to your cart at checkout and it will be applied towards included items. Okay so without further ado, our bedroom!

Simeon Bench & Elena Rug (code KKHxCG20)
Leighton Grey Nightstand & Emily Modern Classic Grey Faux Concrete Table Lamp (KKHxCG20)
Riley Arm Chair (KKHXxCG20)
Leighton Grey Nightstand & Emily Modern Classic Grey Faux Concrete Table Lamp
Riley Arm Chair (code KKHXCG20). A common question about this chair was how large it is which I shared in this post!

Also, I know I mentioned above that you want to feel really confident about the pieces you’re filling your space with. Whether you’re updating an existing space or trying to furnish a new one, I know it can be overwhelming. Kathy Kuo actually has an in-house design firm that can help you with projects of any size. They are a great resource for any guidance you need so don’t be afraid to take advantage of them!

Okay, I think that about covers it! If I missed anything, let me know. All items are also saved on my “Bedroom” highlight. Hope you enjoyed this before & after!
